Regional event organisers and artists, theAbsurd, will be showcasing some of north Wales’s finest talent in the Pavilion marquee at the International Music Eisteddfod, Llangollen this year. On Saturday 10 July, which is also International Family Day at the festival, Eisteddfod visitors are invited to come and enjoy an eclectic array of performances from regional artists including alternative and traditional Welsh folk, blues, rock, reggae and poetry.
Sophie McKeand, who is this year’s Pavilion Poet in residence for 2010, and her partner Andy Garside, graphic designer and DJ, from Mold established theAbsurd 2 years ago, with the aim of promoting the arts, culture, and music from the region.
Sophie McKeand said, “We started with the monthly events to showcase musicians and poets from North Wales both in English and in Welsh language and this ran successfully in Mold for 2 years. We have recently changed our direction to creating one-off events and a quarterly spoken word / poetry events in the Theatre Clwyd and the Pavilion Llangollen.”
The Absurd marquee on the Eisteddfod ground will consist of a breath-taking blend of music and poetry from Welsh artists. Sophie and Andy will be performing along side Llangollen based poet and local-legend, Childe Roland; Bangor based poet Gwyn Parry with his roots reggae band Tacsi; stunning blues/folk couple, Rachel Lloyd & Matt Nicholls from Llangollen; the beautiful, soulful voice of Nia Morgan, originally from Mid-Wales, now based in Manchester; Wrexham-born, dreamy folk with some jazzy-grooves from singer/songwriter, Gwilym Morus; the unique poppy sounds of Mold’s Mechanical Owl; and mysterious, wonderful Yucatan, from Gwynedd will show-case their graceful and elegant Welsh sounds.
Andy Garside added, “We’re very proud and honored to be a part of the Eisteddfod. It’s great that we can give these artists the opportunity to perform on such a renowned international stage.”
Vicki Shenton Morris, the new venue director at the Pavilion added “Working with the Absurd has already brought some excellent North Wales talent to perform at the venue, giving them a platform during the International Eisteddfod naturally develops the relationship further and allows us to demonstrate the Pavilion’s new commitment to working with local musicians and artists.”
The performances start at 10am and finish at 6pm.
